Draft Wesley Clark Video

Here is the link to a video that Wesley Clark made to his meetup.com fans. Now, I'm watching this and I can't tell how much of his charisma is what I'm putting into him or what he objectively has.

To be honest, in just watching him talk, he's more similar than dissimilar to everybody else out there. He hits some notes such as "you" and "greatness of this country" like any other politician. He speaks fluently (unlike Bush though) and is thoughtful. However, he has this drone-eye look and somewhat of a cue-card reading steelyness.

So, so far, I'm impressed only by his resume. I want to know how good this kid debates. Either way, let's throw him in the hat anyways, I think the Democrats need some help.

But seriously, why the hell am I looking at this anyways. I vote, sure, but man, as for meaningful contributions to society through government, there's probably more effective uses of my time, such as trying to get rid of intellectual property laws. So yeah... there's my confession that I use politics for entertainment... especially presidential politics.

I've also met very ppl who actually genuinely give a damn about making this country better. Even the feverent anti-war protestors I've met are just playing on underdog-biases, or succumbing to college-student memes, or are afraid of blood, and usually haven't formed their opinions well. Plus, they also preach to the choir, by protesting in SF...

Whatever, when I get into my ranting voice, I know I'm committing some logical fallacy here and there, so I'll stop. But you get my drift.

Evolutionary Neoteny

J. Z. Young and Excerpts from An Introduction to the Study of Man

Co-operation to drive, trap, and kill large prey such as antelopes or even elephants requires a reduction of competitive and aggressive behavior between individuals. In a sense this could be said to involve in man the continuation throughout life of the characteristic features found among juveniles of monkey and other animal communities. There are indeed several signs that the evolution of man had involved a process of 'juvenilization' or even 'foetalization'. Such a change, technically called neoteny (or paedomorphosis), has in fact occurred often in the course of the evolution of diverse animals (De Beer 1958).

(A missing assumption is that competitiveness is something advanced later in life)

neoteny definition: "Retention of juvenile characteristics in the adults of a species".

(Thanks Peter)

Educate against the RIAA, et al.

From deoxy read Intellectual Property Myths.

This is in reference to...

It looks like the RIAA has rushed to settle with 12-year-old Brianna LaHara, after serving her with a lawsuit on Monday. It looks like her single mother will be paying a $2,000 fine to the RIAA for her daughter's song-swapping, which they had thought was legal. Said Brianna: 'I am sorry for what I have done. I love music and don't want to hurt the artists I love.' What a relief this must be for the Rolling Stones.

4:30

It's 4:30... just got another Taxi Driver-style haircut and it's raining for the first time in a while here in Palo Alto... time to put on my black pants, my collared plasticy black shirt, my black boots, and roll.

Vanilla Skyism

One of my favorite parts of Vanilla Sky is when Kurt Russell makes a desparate monologue @ the end:

I'm real
I'm ...
I'm ...
mortality as HOME ENTERTAINMENT!
this canNOT be the FUTURE!
... can it?
CAN IT?!

And not surprisingly, Kurzweil rated this movie and The Waking Life as the best movies of the millenium (so far). Yes, I now have both of these on DivX.

Don't forget to Lucid Dream tonight. I'm still working on dream recall. I've been getting discouraged lately. My dreams have all been kinda blurry, non-vivid, and when I wake up I forget them. I don't forget them completely, fortunately, but rather retain the awareness that I did have a dream and that I did go through some interesting stuff.

So, I have a few things I want to try that are in the FAQ on that site. The main one I'm focusing on is getting into the habit of focusing on my most recent dream as soon as I awaken. This will get me into the habit of keeping my "memoryerasers" at bay.

As of right now, unfortunately, I wake up and full of thoughts about worries. After a few minutes, THEN I remember that I had a dream, and that I'm supposed to recall it..

...the lucidity experts suggest staying in the same spot upon awakening and rewinding through the events of your recent dream in order to cement them in your head... also to write them down... I get tired of writing them down though, I find that just focusing on them and replaying it during the waking life is good enough to get me going...

High on Information

Slashdot | Addicted to Information?

"According to this New York Times article, two Harvard faculty members say that information causes a "dopamine squirt" in humans, a rush similar to that given by narcotics. Just as narcotics are addictive, information is as well. They've given the disorder of information addiction the name 'pseudo-ADD' because it tends to cause somewhat ADD-like symptoms."

(You have to pay for the NYtimes article.)

Buck says it has something to do with dopamine relases being correlated with learning novel information on your own. Hmm, could explain why I get this antsy feeling and semi-manic behavior when I enter random hives of mega-information on the Internet, like those list of fallacies below. Relates to my Information Monster post.

Logical Fallacies

Fallacies

In order to understand what a fallacy is, one must understand what an argument is. Very briefly, an argument consists of one or more premises and one conclusion. A premise is a statement (a sentence that is either true or false) that is offered in support of the claim being made, which is the conclusion (which is also a sentence that is either true or false).

Everytime I learn a new fallacy of thinking, I suddenly become overwhelmed with a sense of awe at the amount of ridiculousness upon which I've founded many of my ideas that I consider sacred I then quickly retrace my steps through a lot of my thinking, and revise and correct accordingly. Good times, and a good opportunity to learn some new Latin.
