Although it may not be necessary now, since the left is kicking butt with Obama in office, there will be a time when the Democrats will become the underdogs again, and I suggest they adopt the expressions "strong heart liberal" or "tough love liberal." This is similar to how Bush milked the idea of "compassionate conservatism" in 2000.
I would argue that Obama sold himself as a "tough love liberal," although I'm not sure if he's manifested that way since taking office.
