Media units of measurements

Do you ever notice how the media always uses the same, weird objects as units of measurement? For example, I often hear about grapefruit-sized or golf ball-sized hail. How come they don't use apples or oranges for size measurements? Or what about the excessive use of football fields and Boeing 747s to describe lengths? Does the fact that it's mentioned on TV newshour make it biased toward eccentric units?

It almost harks back to tribal times, when we measured things in "antelopes" and "stones."
