I am a fan of E. E. Cummings.

Who says we don't have free will?

(Sort of in increasing order of level of commitment)

A thought comes to your mind, "I want to exercise more"

A thought comes to your mind, "I need to exercise more"

A thought comes to your mind, "I need to exercise more in 2009"

A thought comes to your mind, "I will exercise more in 2009"

You make an effort to say, in your mind, "I will exercise more in 2009"

You make an effort to say, in your mind, "My New Year's Resolution is to exercise more in 2009"

You make an effort to say, in your mind, on New Year's Day, "My New Year's Resolution is to exercise more in 2009"

You say, aloud, to yourself, "My New Year's Resolution is to exercise more in 2009"

You say, aloud, with one other person hearing, "My New Year's Resolution is to exercise more in 2009"

You say, aloud, in a group setting, "My New Year's Resolution is to exercise more in 2009"

You write down on a piece of paper, "My New Year's Resolution is to exercise more in 2009" but you throw the paper away later

You write on your blog, "My New Year's Resolution is to exercise more in 2009"

You write down on a piece of paper, "My New Year's Resolution is to exercise more in 2009" and you tape the paper to your computer

You write down on a piece of paper, "My New Year's Resolution is to exercise more in 2009" and you keep it in your wallet

I'm fascinated by proverbs. These one-liners seem to end conversations with their wit and wisdom. Sometimes, a proverb becomes a mantra under which we lives our lives by. Having said that, Brian S. Kendig has compiled a handful of contradicting proverbs. Kind of flips the whole business on its head. I also just like his presentation:

He who hesitates is lost! B U T Look before you leap!
Birds of a feather flock together! B U T Opposites attract!
You're never too old to learn! B U T You can't teach an old dog new tricks!
Doubt is the beginning of wisdom! B U T Faith will move mountains!
The pen is mightier than the sword! B U T Actions speak louder than words!
Don't cross your bridges before you come to them! B U T Forewarned is forearmed!
Silence is golden! B U T The squeaky wheel gets the grease!
Clothes make the man! B U T Never judge a book by its cover!
Good things come in small packages! B U T The bigger the better!
A miss is as good as a mile! B U T Half a loaf is better than none!
Great starts make great finishes! B U T It ain't over 'till it's over!
Practice makes perfect! B U T All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy!
A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush! B U T A man's reach should exceed his grasp!
Ignorance is bliss! B U T An unexamined life is not worth living!
