I am back @ Stanford

3 years into my major, I quit Stanford in January of 2003. After journeys into the desert and London, I then rejoined for summer school. Only to quit again 6 weeks ago. After more journeys, this time more Oneiric in nature, I am back at Stanford, finishing up. Should be graduating on time at the end of Spring in 2004. How did all of this nonsense happen? More to follow.

SEC tango with Stock Market

So Sue Me
What's the best way to punish corporate criminals? With lawsuits, not prison sentences.
By Daniel Gross

Original Article

Excerpt...

As for cops at the SEC, they may talk tough and hold flashy press conferences when they nab insider traders. But in the global scheme of things, they may not be so important. "When we try to understand specifically what works in securities laws, we find that several aspects of public enforcement, such as having an independent and/or focused regulator or criminal sanctions, do not matter, and others matter in only some regressions." In other words, "Public enforcement plays, at best, a modest role in the development of stock markets."

Skepticism to my early Singularity claims

Philosophistry frequenteur Mr. Strange Loops takes a skeptical view (for archives, look at entry on 9/22/03) at my claims on an early triumph on discovering the signals indicative that the Singularity is upon us.

Past the 800th post

We're already past 800 posts on philosophistry, and this site has only been up since March. This may also be the first month with a post every day as well. Hmm, I'm trying to figure out a way to make those 800 previous posts come alive.. cuz nobody reads archives.

Steve Martin - How I joined Mensa

Steve Martin - How I Joined Mensa

I started with the phone book. Looking up "mensa" was not going to be easy, what with having to follow the strict alphabetizing rules that are so common nowadays. I prefer a softer, more fuzzy alphabetizing scheme, one that allows the mind to float free and "happen" upon the word. There is pride in that. The dictionary is a perfect example of over-alphabetization, with its harsh rules and every little words neatly in place. It almost makes me never want to eat again.

Stumbleupon.com as XML

BTW, StumbleUpon is great... it's like my revolver blogroll above on steroids (i.e. personalized and larger). I may get addicted to Stumblin' soon, I recommend you check it out. I was suggesting they provide a way to integrate my selected stumbles into my blogrolls or straight into my blog.

myLAR Update in sight? short-cut knowledge syndrome?

Where are the new posts about the law of accelerating returns? I had promised a daily-series of hacks that showed how something as complex as the eye could come about from "simple" evolution. I've either lost steam, or I've been really tired these past few days.

From the Mundane to the Glorious

When I doubt the speed about which the Singularity could be upon us, I look at the ways that miracle dream-scenarios emerge out of the mundane.

Here are three examples of things that would let us know we're close or in the Singularity:
(1) Holodecks (2) Everybody has all knowledge (3) Everybody is happy

RE: Book-A-Minute Classics

This is regards to previous post, Book-a-minute Classics.

Come to think of it, remembering books is like remembering dreams. I usually remember one or two sentence of the main lesson or overall structure... AND that I went through an experience with it that had x depth, y kind of style, z kind of beauty. So these book-a-minute classics are not totally facetious.

Solipsistic Phil; Whadup Happiness?

First. I am exceedingly complex.

Second. There is a general 'system' or mentality for living that's been floating in my mind since I was 14ish when I first came up with the mantra, "Observe, Analyze, Apply."

Book-a-minute Classics

Book-A-Minute Classics

We here at Book-A-Minute Classics have come up with a solution. We've taken all kinds of great works of literature and boiled them down to their essence, extracting all the filler (and believe me, there's a lot of it sometimes). In just one minute, you can read entire books and learn everything your teachers will expect you to know.

Human Evolutionary Psychology Book

Human Evolutionary Psychology Book

Why do people resort to plastic surgery to look young? Why are stepchildren at greatest risk of fatal abuse? Why do we prefer gossip to algebra? Why must Dogon wives live alone in a dark hut for five days a month? Why are young children good at learning language but not sharing? Over the past decade, psychologists and behavioral ecologists have been finding answers to such seemingly unrelated questions by applying an evolutionary perspective to the study of human behavior and psychology. Human Evolutionary Psychology is a comprehensive, balanced, and readable introduction to this burgeoning field. It combines a sophisticated understanding of the basics of evolutionary theory with a solid grasp of empirical case studies.

I purused this book at Borders today... some of the topics blew my mind. I may buy it later, but if I don't, I hope you do and fill me in on it.
